This was probably the model for the Hotel des Etrangers in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night. Built in 1870 in the style of a seaside château, the hotel is now composed of three buildings set right into the rocks at the end of Cap d’Antibes. The building known as the Eden Roc has suites and a well-known restaurant with huge windows overlooking the sea. The seawater pool, with its rocky back wall and overflowing infinity edge, is particularly dramatic. Like the Grand Hotel du Cap in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, this is a place that takes itself very seriously. Although the rooms are, perhaps, breezier and less frigidly status-aware, the staff is not. Expect to tip handsomely. The hotel is far too grand to accept anything as vulgar as a credit card, so plan to pay for your room doubles start at euro 550 and there are only a few “standard” doubles with cash or wire funds ahead. Interestingly, it’s not too grand to use its celebrity clientele for sales advantage. Check out the A to Z listing of celebrity guests on their website. By the way, this hotel has no “off season” – it is open from April through September.
